Grieg Morning Mood from Peer Gynt Suite No. 1

Grieg – "Morning Mood“ from Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (HD) | Free Classical Music Music: http://musopen.org; Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b... Picture: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Sun... … Morning Mood (Norwegian: Morgenstemning) is a composition belonging to Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt, Op. 23, written in 1875 as incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's play of the same name, and was also included as the first of four movements in Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46. The melody in the piece is alternating between flute and oboe. Setting The piece depicts the rising of the sun during Act IV, Scene 4, of Ibsen's play, which finds the eponymous hero stranded in the Moroccan desert after his companions took his yacht and abandoned him there while he slept. The scene begins with the following description: A grove of palms and acacias at dawn. PEER GYNT is up a tree, protecting himself with a broken-off branch from a swarm of apes. As the Peer Gynt suites take their pieces out of the original context of the play, Morning Mood is not widely known in its original setting, and images of Grieg's Scandinavian origins more frequently spring to the minds of its listeners than those of the desert it was written to depict. Brahms Hungarian Dance No. 5

Brahms - Hungarian Dance No. 5 (HD) | Free Classical Music Music: 19 Brahms Hungarian Dance No 5 by ccradiocc-classic-morning is licensed under Creative Commons: Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b... Picture: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia... The Hungarian Dances (German: Ungarische Tänze) by Johannes Brahms (WoO 1), are a set of 21 lively dance tunes based mostly on Hungarian themes, completed in 1869. They vary from about a minute to four minutes in length. They are among Brahms's most popular works, and were certainly the most profitable for him. Each dance has been arranged for a wide variety of instruments and ensembles. Brahms originally wrote the version for piano four-hands and later arranged the first 10 dances for solo piano. Only numbers 11, 14 and 16 are entirely original compositions. The most famous Hungarian Dance is No. 5 in F♯ minor, which was based on the csárdás by Béla Kéler titled "Bártfai emlék" which Brahms mistakenly thought was a traditional folksong. List of Hungarian Dances • Book 1. (Published in 1869) 1. in G minor: Allegro molto 2. in D minor: Allegro non assai – Vivace 3. in F major: Allegretto 4. in F minor (F♯ minor for orchestra): Poco sostenuto – Vivace 5. in F♯ minor (G minor for orchestra): Allegro – Vivace • Book 2. (Published in 1869) 6. in D♭ major (D major for orchestra): Vivace 7. in A major (F major for orchestra): Allegretto – Vivo 8. in A minor: Presto 9. in E minor: Allegro ma non troppo 10. in E major (F major for orchestra): Presto • Book 3. (Published in 1880) 11. in D minor: Poco andante 12. in D minor: Presto 13. in D major: Andantino grazioso – Vivace 14. in D minor: Un poco andante 15. in B♭ major: Allegretto grazioso 16. in F minor: Con moto – F major: Presto • Book 4. Debussy Clair de Lune

Music: Caela Harrison; Licensed under Creative Commons: Attribution-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b... Picture: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Moo... The Suite bergamasque is one of the most famous piano suites by Claude Debussy. Debussy commenced the suite in 1890 at age 28, but he did not finish or publish it until 1905. The Suite bergamasque was first composed by Debussy around 1890, but was significantly revised just before its publication in 1905. It seems that by the time a publisher came to Debussy in order to cash in on his fame and have these pieces published, Debussy loathed the earlier piano style in which these pieces were written. While it is not known how much of the Suite was written in 1890 and how much was written in 1905, it is clear that Debussy changed the names of at least two of the pieces. "Passepied" was called "Pavane", and "Clair de lune" was originally titled "Promenade Sentimentale." These names also come from Paul Verlaine's poems. Structure The Suite bergamasque consists of four movements: 1. "Prélude" 2. "Menuet" 3. "Clair de lune" ("Moonlight" in English) 4. "Passepied" The suite has been orchestrated by many composers, including André Caplet, Leopold Stokowski, and Lucien Cailliet. Dimitri Tiomkin arranged "Clair de lune" for organ for his musical score for Warner Brothers' 1956 film Giant. The first three movements include a common motif: • "Prélude": F – E – F – E – D (bar 11) • "Menuet": G – F – G – F – E (bar 6) • "Clair de lune": F – E♭ – F – E♭ – D♭ (bars 1–2) […] "Clair de lune" The third and most famous movement of Suite bergamasque is "Clair de lune," meaning "moonlight" in French. Its name comes from Paul Verlaine's poem of the same name which also refers to 'bergamasques' in its opening stanza: Votre âme est un paysage choisi / Que vont charmant masques et bergamasques / Jouant du luth et dansant et quasi / Tristes sous leurs déguisements fantasques. Pachelbel Canon in D Major

Pachelbel - Canon in D Major Music: "Canon in D Major" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b... … Pachelbel's Canon is the name commonly given to a canon by the German Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel in his Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo (German: Kanon und Gigue für 3 Violinen mit Generalbaß) (PWC 37, T. 337, PC 358). It is his most famous composition. It was originally scored for three violins and basso continuo and paired with a gigue. Both movements are in the key of D major. Like most other works by Pachelbel and other pre-1700 composers, the Canon remained forgotten for centuries and was rediscovered only in the 20th century. Several decades after it was first published in 1919 the piece became extremely popular. The piece was particularly prevalent in the pop charts of the 1990s, being sampled and appropriated in numerous commercial hits such as Pet Shop Boys cover of "Go West", Coolio's "C U When U Get There" and Green Day's "Basket Case". It is frequently played at weddings and included on classical music compilations, along with other famous Baroque pieces such as 'Air on the G String'. Although a true canon at the unison in three parts, it also has elements of a chaconne. It has frequently been arranged and transcribed for many media. Source: " Pachelbel's Canon." Charpentier Prelude from 'Te Deum'

Charpentier – Prelude from „Te Deum” (HD) | Free Classical Music Music: http://musopen.org (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b...) Picture: Marc-Antoine Charpentier composed his grand polyphonic motet Te Deum (H. 146) in D major probably between 1688 and 1698, during his stay at the Jesuit Church of Saint-Louis in Paris, where he held the position of musical director. The work is written for the group of soloists, choir, and instrumental accompaniment. Charpentier authored six Te Deum settings, although only four of them have survived. It is thought that the composition have been performed to mark the victory celebrations and the Battle of Steinkirk in August, 1692. Structure The composition consists of the following parts: • Prelude (Marche en rondeau) • Te Deum laudamus (bass solo) • Te aeternum Patrem (chorus and SSAT solo) • Pleni sunt caeli et terra (chorus) • Te per orbem terrarum (trio, ATB) • Tu devicto mortis aculeo (chorus, bass solo) • Te ergo quaesumus (soprano solo) • Aeterna fac cum sanctis tuis (chorus) • Dignare, Domine (duo, SB) • Fiat misericordia tua (trio, SSB) • In te, Domine, speravi (chorus with ATB trio) Charpentier considered the key D-major as "bright and very warlike". The instrumental introduction, composed in the form of rondo, precedes the first verset, led by the bass soloist. The choir and other soloists join gradually. Charpentier apparently intended to orchestrate the work according to the traditional exegesis of the Latin text. The choir thus predominates in the first part (verset 1-10, praise of God, heavenly dimension), and individual soloists in the second part (verset 10-20, Christological section, secular dimension). In subsequent versets, nos. 21-25, both soloists and choir alternate, and the final verset is a large-scale fugue written for choir, with a short trio for soloists in the middle. Beethoven Symphony No 9

The Symphony No. 9, Op. 125 (sometimes known simply as "the Choral"), is the final complete symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven. Completed in 1824, the symphony is one of the best-known works of the Western repertoire. Almost universally considered to be among Beethoven's greatest works, it was one of the first examples of a composer using voices in a symphony. The words, sung during the final movement by vocal soloists and a chorus, were taken from the Ode to Joy by Friedrich Schiller, with additions made by the composer. It stands as one of the most played symphonies in the world. In 2002, Beethoven's autograph score, held by the Berlin State Library, was added to the United Nations World Heritage List, becoming the first musical score to be so honoured.

As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image or file is in the public domain Picture: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS http://www.mnh.si.edu/exhibits/evolvi... The Planets, Op. 32, is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst. With the exception of Earth, all major planets in the Solar System are represented. From its premiere to the present day, the suite has been enduringly popular, influential, widely performed and frequently recorded. The work was not heard in a complete public performance, however, until some years after it was completed. Although there were four performances between September 1918 and October 1920, they were all either private (the first performance, in London) or incomplete (two others in London and one in Birmingham). The premiere was at the Queen's Hall on 29 September 1918, conducted by Holst's friend Adrian Boult before an invited audience of about 250 people. The first complete public performance was finally given in London by Albert Coates conducting the London Symphony Orchestra on 15 November 1920. […] Structure The suite has seven movements, each named after a planet and its corresponding astrological character (see Planets in astrology): 1. Mars, the Bringer of War 2. Venus, the Bringer of Peace 3. Mercury, the Winged Messenger 4. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity 5. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age 6. Uranus, the Magician 7. Neptune, the Mystic Holst's original title, as seen on the handwritten full score, was "Seven Pieces for Large Orchestra". Holst almost certainly attended an early performance of Schoenberg's Five Pieces for Orchestra in 1914 (the year he wrote "Mars", "Venus" and "Jupiter"), and owned a score of it, the only Schoenberg score he ever owned.[20] Each movement of Holst's work was originally called only by the second part of each title (I "The Bringer of War", II "The Bringer of Peace" and so on); the present titles were added in time for the first (incomplete) public performance in September 1919, though they were never added to the original score. A typical performance of all seven movements is about fifty minutes long, though Holst's own electric recording from 1926 is just over forty-two and a half minutes.
